The first game had BITS host the Panthers in their first home game of the season. BITS took the lead early and at quarter time were up by 17 points. However, the Panthers came out hard in the second quarter putting on 7 goals and taking an 11 point lead into the main break.
Whilst it looked like Panthers may be too strong, BITS fought back in the third quarter, and regained the lead. Despite some inaccurate kicking which may have seen the lead increase, BITS cruised home to eventually win 14.20 (104) to 11.4 (70) win in the wet conditions. Danny Hunt was named best on for the winners and will be looking to stamp his authority on the competition this year as one of the premier midfielders in the league.
The second game was between last years pemiers Yeppoon and Brothers. Whilst Brothers were looking to get their first win of the season, Yeppoon was aiming to get to a 2-0 start and build themselves for another solid year. To make things more difficult for Brothers Scott Smithwick was out injured and had been one of their better players against Gladstone the week before.
Yeppoon got off to a flyer, having nine scoring shots in the first quarter and holding their opponents goalless for the quarter. The second quarter was more even with both teams kicking 5 goals each, yet Yeppoon led by 25 points at the change due to their quick start. In the end the hard running from the Yeppoon midfield, as well as their ability to break tackles, allowed them to run out 43 point winners. The alarming sign for Brothers was that they allowed their opponents more than twice as many scoring shots, however they must be encouraged by the form of young John Sleaford in his first game of the year.
The final game of the weekend had Gladstone taking on Glenmore. With the Muddies not having a win in Rockhampton for over a year, they were desperate for this to change. With a number of senior players out with work commitments there were four players brought in from the U/17's for their first senior game.
The first half was extremely close with nothing between the two teams. Both were finding plenty of ball through the middle of the ground however were failing to put on much scoreboard pressure, only a point separated the teams at the break. Nick Stanley was given the job on the dangerous Darcy Payne after he had kicked 7 goals the previous week, and did a fantastic job keeping him to only a handful of touches in the opening half.
Glenmore came out firing in the second half and had a couple of goals in the opening two minutes of the quarter. Their impressive running continued throughout the quarter, headed by Isaac Kielly getting his hands on everything though the middle. They had established a 23 point lead at 3/4 time and whilst the Muddies battled hard to get the scores level in the last quarter, Glenmore rallied and Toby Payne kicked accurately from a set shot late in the quarter to secure the win for the home side.
