With the first week of the real season now completed it looks as though we may have a very even competition this year. With the lower teams recruiting well over the summer and last years grand finalists losing young guns to clubs in the State League (BITS Jack Ford and Yeppoon Tim Higgins) the competition should produce some great games this season.
In the Grand Final rematch Yeppoon was too strong at home for BITS, getting home by 46 points. Whilst the margin is quite considerable, it could have been even greater with Yeppoon having 16 more scoring shots. Whilst it was quite even on the scoreboard in the first half Yeppoon managed to kick away in the later stages of the game, with BITS unable to register a major in the final quarter. This may have been a result of a number of players having to "double up" on the day.
The game between Gladstone and Brothers was a very tight, contested game. With scores very tight all game, in the end it went the Muddies way by 10 points. At the final change it was Gladstone leading by three goals and it looked as though they may go away with it in the last quarter. However, to the Brothers credit they fought back hard in the opening 10 minutes of the quarter, coming back to within a couple of points. If it wasn't for some inaccurate kicking for goal which saw them them kick 3.7 for the quarter, they could have well ended up with the win. The Muddies were able to kick a couple of goals late in the quarter to record the win.
In the last game of the round, Panthers took on Glenmore under lights at the Rockhampton Cricket Ground. With Glenmore getting a quick start to the game, the Panthers were not able to make up the four goal lead the Bulls had established at 1/4 time. In the end the Panthers had reduced the margin to 14 points, just not enough after giving Glenmore the start that they did. Darcy Payne put in the performance of the round, kicking 7 goals and racking up the possessions. Missing the U/18 carnival due to injuring his knee in the first 5 minutes of the opening game, he will be hoping for a big year.
