Paul Archers The Good Guys Capricornia U/16 representative team have returned from the Country Championships with a number of good results. Capricornia came away with one win out of the six games played. The side lost the first game against Cairns but recovered to have a strong 16 point win over Bundaberg Wide Bay. Capricornia then had hard games against Mackay, Darling Downs and Townsville going down by large margins. The final game saw Capricornia up against eventual winners of the carnival the Cape York Crusaders. The side was hard at the football and matched the Crusaders in physical strength around the ball. Capricornia had a number of opportunities to convert, however they did not make the most of their opportunities. Crusaders eventually got up to win comfortably.
One of the highlights of the weekend was the selection of Jacob Mills and Logan Thornborrow to represent the Country Kookaburra’s U/16 side at the State Championships. Jacob Mills had an outstanding carnival playing as a key forward and backman providing a good target with his strong marking. Logan Thornborrow dominated in the ruck providing a strong physical presence and covering a lot of ground. Other players to perform well and were unlucky not to be picked in the country side include Daniel Hunt, Darcy Payne and Ethan Rose.
A number of lower age U/16’s participated in the carnival and gained a lot of experience that will help them improve on this years performance. Players to look out for next year include Luke Lambart, Jimmy Keller and Clayton Jepson. AFL Capricornia would like to thank Don Pollock, Micheal Lambart, Noreen Rose, Ray Rose and Micheal Rose for their efforts over the weekend and are valued volunteers. We now look forward to the U/14 Championships held in Rockhampton on the 7th, 8th and 9th of June.
