NOT many can say they have notched a double century, and even fewer will have witnessed two in the same day.
But that’s what will happen tomorrow at Watsons Oval when Daniel Lock and Matthew Anning run out for the Cutters against North Cairns.
And even if we’re not talking cricket, it is still a stand-out achievement given the short-term nature of most Australian rules careers in Cairns. But playing 200 games for the green and red was the main reason Lock, a Souths junior, returned from an NEAFL stint with the Belconnen Magpies.
That, and to nurture a young and predominantly local group.
"It’s pretty much the reason … to help the club move forward and play finals. I think they’ve actually surprised themselves with how good they’re going."
Like fellow AFL Cairns 100-game veterans Luke Powell (Manunda) and Brent Craighead (Centrals), Lock said his main joy was the development of the juniors.
"The maturity of the 17 and 18 year olds has amazed me. They are playing like 60-gamers," he said.
Lock has been in great form this year too, earning the vice-captaincy as a result.
And along with forwards Mick Markham and Glen Gascoyne, he has helped the side remain undefeated at home this year. But on the flip side is their 100 per cent losing record away from Fretwell Park.
That leaves them at 6-4 and sitting a commendable third, but the away form is something Lock wants to remedy.
"We need to go out this weekend and show the other clubs we are fair dinkum," he said.
"Looking at the comp from inside out, Saints are 10 goals better than Norths and as of last meeting Norths are 10 goals better than us," he said.
"But it’s been a while between our last meeting. This match-up will show us where we’re at."
