AFL Cairns will compete against the Country Stockman at Cazalys Stadium on Sunday, 10th June 2012, with the match commencing at 2:00pm. The Country Stockman is a representative team comprising of players from SEQ and all other regions of Qld other than Cairns. Players from both teams will vie for positions in the Queensland Country side to compete in the Australian Country Championships to be played in Wagga Wagga, NSW on July 19-22.
The team will be coached by 2010/2011 AFL Cairns Coach of the Year and former Port Douglas Crocs Coach Andy Viola, who will be assisted by Cairns Saints past players, coaching mentor and former Crathern Medallist Mark Kennedy and North Cairns Coach Kane Richter.
Coach Andy Voila is excited by the quality and depth of the selected squad and is happy with how the selection process took place.
“All coaches have been watching matches over the last 8 weeks in order to bring this squad together,” Viola said.
“The inclusion of two former AFL players in Gill and Liddy certainly strengthens our side, and the previous representative experience within the squad is a bonus. Many of the boys now know what it takes to play at that level. The standard really goes up, the pace is much quicker across the park, its quality football.”
“We have a good balance from all Clubs represented, but the Clubs leading the way on-field in the competition will always tend to have more players included”.
AFL Cairns accounted for AFL Sydney in last year’s Representative match in Cairns. However the Stockman were too strong in 2010 at Coorparoo, Brisbane, with Cairns going down by 50 points. Cairns are expecting a strong opposition again but are confident of a win on home soil.
