They worked hard to get him to the Crocs and it didn't take long for teenage livewire Skip Gribbon to show his worth. The high-flying forward kicked six goals and took at least three speckies in front of his new home crowd to defeat South Cairns 22.11 (143) to 8.11 (59) on a beautiful Easter Saturday at Port Douglas.
The grandstand erupted when the 19-year-old soared high above the pack in the goal square to take a mark on the quarter-time siren. His major that followed gave the Crocs a seven goals-to-one buffer that, although they tried hard, the Cutters were never going to drag back.
While Souths’ intensity improved in the second half, the damage had already been done. The Crocs kicked four straight goals to open the match before Trent Harman snapped to give the Cutters their first major. By halftime, the margin was almost 10 goals, courtesy of some clever work from another forward recruit Kyle Brown.
The muscle-bound newcomer, from Pomona on the Sunshine Coast, first chased down an indecisive Cutters defender with the ball, then playing on when there was no one on the mark. The visitors showed a lot more fight, but in front of a bumper home crowd, Port were able to breeze home.
"We showed some good signs the week before as well, but it was good to get a little more consistency this week," Port Douglas Crocs coach Brad Cooper said. "Skip took a few nice ones there for us – he was good. We tried hard to recruit him because we knew a few clubs were after him."
