The absence of star recruit Nick Gill does not have to be a negative thing for Cairns Saints, heading into today's clash with North Cairns, says player-coach Nick Braybon.Gill, an ex-Adelaide Crows AFL key forward, booted seven goals in his AFL Cairns debut last weekend.
And, more importantly, he combined well with fellow forwards Alex MacQueen (seven goals) and Matt Walsh (three) in ominous signs for opposition sides. But Gill and Dan Mulvihill – the man who lured him to the club – are both in Adelaide for Easter, meaning someone else will have to fill their boots. And that is just what Braybon wants, as he goes about building a side that boasts more than one avenue of attack.
"It’s a chance for another bloke to announce himself and I’d like to see our midfield get more involved in attack this week as well," he said.
Braybon is one of those men, and admits it was hard to inject himself last week, with the forwards all lining up for goals against a Manunda side yet to hit their straps.
"Word around the traps is they are going to be a lot better than that, and we know this Norths game is going to be a pretty big test for us as well," he said.
