AFL Cairns officials will visit Watsons Oval at midday today to inspect the playing surface over safety fears for the women's league matches. South Cairns Cutters are set to play Centrals Trinity Bulldogs and Manunda Hawks meet North Cairns Tigers. But games are in danger of being cancelled after recent heavy rains.
"At the moment, we’re going ahead, but we’ll look at things again tomorrow," AFL Cairns operations manager Melissa Dunstan said yesterday afternoon. "We can play in the rain if the ground is still safe, so it has to be a lot of rain for the game to be cancelled. The drainage there is pretty good."
For the Manunda Hawks, they expect to face a North Cairns side reeling from last week’s draw with South Cairns.
"After the game last week I said, ‘whoever is facing them next week better watch out’," Hawks coach Fiona Sharp said. "The girls just looked at me and said ‘it’s us’.
