AFL matches, cricket internationals and major entertainment acts are set to become regular diary dates on the Cairns calendar following the addition of two new light towers at Cazalys. Construction on the twin light towers at the Westcourt ground will start this morning and are set to almost double the brightness of lighting, bringing it up to live broadcast standards.
AFL Cairns president Gary Young said it opened up a wealth of possibilities. He said there had already been interest from a "spectacular entertainment event", but he would not confirm details.
"It (the new lights) means next year’s AFL game (on July 14) can be played as a twilight match and the game can be played live. Obviously, there’s nothing concrete yet, but there will only be the Gabba, Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast and ourselves with these facilities so that puts us in very good position."
The Richmond Tigers are currently locked into a three-year arrangement to play one match here each season. But given the success of this year’s game, which had a turnout of almost 11,000 people for the match against the Gold Coast Suns, Mr Young said the new lighting could hopefully seal a permanent agreement with the AFL.
