South Cairns took their early season resurgence to another level in the AFL Cairns Women's League to another level, toppling Centrals Trinity Bulldogs by seven points at Watson's Oval on Saturday. With new coach Rob Lemmey settling into the gig, Cutters produced a strong third quarter display, scoring two goals, to lay the platform to the victory.
Ashleigh Singleton and Laura Martin both slotted two goals apiece as the main targets in front of goal, and Meaghan Gerchow kicked Cutters’ fifth goal. While Cutters were balanced and had varied options to kick goals, it was a contrasting story for their opponents. The Bulldogs managed just one goal in each stanza, with Kat Fatnowna their lone option in the forward line booting all four majors.
The Cutters, who slumped to 66 and 69 point defeats in the opening two rounds, put some writing on the wall that a win wasn’t far away with a credibility restoring 41-point loss to the reigning premiers, North Cairns Tigers last weekend.
In the other game, Tigers asserted their authority and pulled away at the top of the table against a hapless Manunda Hawks outfit. Deborah Bond was the focal point up forward for the Tigers with three goals. Jo Butland booted two. The Tigers were ruthless in their approach, not wavering in the onslaught by keeping the Hawks scoreless for three quarters.
