North Cairns have started their AFL Cairns Women's League title defence in style with a crushing 66-point victory over Souths on Saturday. The Tigers prevailed 10.12 (72) to 1.0 (6) at Watsons Oval, with the Cutters’ lone major not arriving until the final quarter.
Maddison Peters was on target for the reigning premiers, finishing the match with three goals. Tigers player-coach Jo Butland said the performance was as good as she could hope for against an under-strength Cutters.
"Souths were struggling a bit for players, so credit to them for getting a team out there," she said. "But we also had a lot of new players playing their first games and from our perspective it was good because we were able to give them all a taste of the action."
In Saturday’s other match at Watsons Oval, a stirring second half propelled Centrals Trinity Beach to a 5.8 (38) to 4.1 (25) victory over the Manunda Hawks.
The Bulldogs led by a point at halftime before pulling away from the 2010-11 grand finalists in the last two quarters. Kat Fatnowna booted four goals for the Bulldogs in a stellar individual performance.
