TYSON Lane has been waiting for a chance to coach and play footy again in the Far North and when the opportunity arose he wasted no time booking a flight to Cairns.
The 2004 Crathern Medallist, who previously played for North Cairns (2003-05) and the Manunda Hawks (2006), returns to the AFL Cairns for the first time in four seasons next year as coach of Centrals Trinity Beach.
Lane spent two seasons in charge of Hastings FC (2008-09) in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League before shifting to Eastern Football League club Knox this year, but his thoughts never drifted far from Cairns.
When work brought Lane and his wife back to the Far North, the former Collingwood and Western Bulldogs player applied for the Centrals coaching position vacated by Mick Seymour.
With the role secured, Lane has started settling into his new football home.
"It’s just great to be back in Cairns. A lot of our good friends and family are up here and it was always the plan to come back," the 34-year-old said.
"Centrals are a great club and one of the most successful in Cairns and have made the finals the past couple of years.
"They’ve got some great juniors coming through and I’m really happy with the new committee that’s been formed."
