AFL Cairns President Gary Young believes a big crowd at next Saturday's VFL match between the Gold Coast and Bendigo Bombers at Cazalys will help the city secure an AFL fixture next season.
Young said AFL heavyweights would be at the ground and a crown of at least 2500 would send a clear message that Cairns deserved a regular seasion AFL match.
"It's important we get a decent crowd because it will give us a very real chance of getting an AFL game as early as next year," he said. "It's something we're pushing hard for. "Think of it like a semi-final. "If you perform you go to the next level and if you don't you could be out of the game."
The biggest factor that could determine the size of the attendance on July 17 is the on-field presense of Gold Coast recruit Karmichael Hunt. The former rugby league star has attracted huge crowds to his first two VFL games but while Hunt will make the trip with the Gold Coast to Cairns, he is no certainty to play.
But with Far North products Charlie Dixon, Rex Liddy and Lewis Moss on the Gold Coast's roster, Young believes footy fans have plenty of season to show up.
"These young guys have an amazing opportunity with the Gold Coast" Young said. "By working hard at developing their games and looking after their bodies they could join the GC17 team that takes to the AFL field in 2011."
The Gold Coast arrive in Cairns next Friday and will train at Cazalys that same afternoon before holding a fan autograph session between 4:30pm and 5:00pm.
General admission for the Gold Coast v Bendigo Bomber midday match is $11, while reserve grandstand seats are $15. Admision for children under 16 is free. Tickets are available at the gate or by calling 4054 1464.
