When Andy Viola retook the Port Douglas coaching job earlier this season for the first time since 2006, one of his priorities was to help the Crocs will back respect from rival clubs.
After 12 rounds it is safe to say Voila had accomplished his mission..and the some.
The Crocs handed out another thrashing on Saturday, this time to reigning AFL Cairns premiers Cairns Saints at Griffiths Park.
While Saints were undermanned, there was no doubting which team was the competition benchmarks as the Crocs unleashed one of their most dominate performances of the year to win 19.21-135 to 6.10-46.
Crocs forward Matt Shaw passed the 50-goal mark for the season by booting five majors, while former St Kilda player Caydn Beetam was a ball magnet across the park.
While may punters might think only an of God can stop his side form winning the big one in September, Voila said his players were taking nothing for granted.
“We’re trying to improve every week and we don’t think we’ve got everything covered,” he said.
“Every week we’re looking at our deficiencies, different set ups and strategies.
“That help keeps things fresh and the players motivated.”
Brenton Powell was names Saints’ best on ground.
In Saturday’s other games, the Manunda Hawks thumped South Cairns 21.18-144 to 2.5-17 at Fretwell Park.
Fred Pittorino booted six goals for the Hawks, and teammate Kevin Rundle contributed four.
With games against North Cairns and Saints awaiting his team the next two weeks, hawks coach Paul Griffiths believes his side can almost seal a final spot with two wins.
“The boys are champing at the bit for the next two weeks and it’s almost like I have to hold them back,” he said.
