On Thursday the Piccones U17 Cairns Lions will head to Melbourne to embark on a “Melbourne Footy Feast”.
The team will play two games while in Melbourne, one against the strong Essendon Districts Football League on Thursday evening and the second against Riddell Football League on Sunday. The games pose great challenges for our local players and give them the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best players in Victoria.
Essendon Districts and Riddell football leagues also act as the feeder competitions for the Western Jets and the Calder Cannons in the elite U18 TAC Cup competition so they will no doubt field quality line-ups.
The trip not only acts a vehicle for extending and developing young Cairns players but also gives our locals the saturation level Melbourne AFL cultural experience and the opportunity to view a game at the highest level.
Last year Cairns played Riddell Football league and despite going down to the Victorian hosts the trip was terrific success with the players learning a great deal. Riddell Football League is currently exploring playing a return game in Cairns later in the year.
“In Cairns we can give our players quality training programs and resources but we can’t provide that level of competition in an underage program making the trip a valuable exercise” “There is also an element of reward for the players that have committed to the summer development training program since November”
If you would like some photos, footage or interviews the groups’ final training session will be on Monday afternoon (30th March) at 5pm at Cazalys.
