Former Centrals Trinity coach Mick Seymour has predicted another two horse race in the AFL Cairns premiership as teams prepare to return for a tough pre-season.
Seymour was replaced by 2004 Crathern Medallist Tyson Lane at helm after two seasons at Bulldogs and is looking forward to watching from the bar rather than the dugout this time around.
He said last year’s finalists Port Douglas and premiers Saints would once again dominate the regular season.
“That’s the way it looks, which is a shame,” he said. “The competition dropped off last year compared with 2008 and I’d say a few clubs will be skinny again. Saints will line up strong again through though and Port will definitely want to make amends after falling down in the final.”
While the addition of Lane at the Bulldogs will be a huge boost, Seymour said the transient nature of Cairns meant it was always be hard to retain a bulk of players from the previous season.
“There’s always going to be eight or nine players missing when you come back next season,” he said. “There isn’t enough money in clubs to actually play a player a wage, so you’ve got to find them work. It’s always hard to keep a team together. And it’s a shame because there’s nothing better as a coach than having a nice, even competition.”
