SOUTHS' unbeaten AFL Cairns season run is over, halted by the stiff-shouldered resistance and uncompromising attitude of Centrals Trinity Beach at Crathern Oval on Saturday.
By the final siren, the Cutters’ loss had taken on thrashing proportions with the Bulldogs turning a four-point lead at halftime into a 21.11 (137) to 9.9 (63) thumping.
If he was allowed, Bulldogs coach Mick Seymour would have been tempted to include his whole squad in the bests list given the complete nature of Saturday’s performance.
The early stages of the game were played with an intensity befitting a final and there is a strong chance these teams will collide sometime in September.
While the Cutters remain on top of the ladder for now, it is the Bulldogs who can claim bragging rights until next they meet in round 19.
Seymour said his leadership group of Barnett, centre halfback Ben Ryan and ruckman Peter Reynolds was outstanding.
"We stuck with Souths in the first half and we went into halftime pretty confident," he said.
"I thought our midfield dominated theirs. We had a lot more run in the second half and finished with more in the tank. It was a physical game. They are a physical side and did not take a backward step.
