The 1955 Tasmanian State Grand Final is famous as the first instance where a team from the North-west Coastal region of Tasmania was able to lift the state title. It was also the first time that a north-west team was to compete, the first instance where a southern team would not compete and both clubs â Ulverstone and Longford â were aiming for their first state title.
The game entered the annals of Tasmanian football history after a massive build up of expectation along the north-west coast and across the northern midlands of Tasmania. A huge Tasmanian State Grand Final crowd of more than 10,000 travelled to Launcestonâs York Park to watch the game and see the Ulverstone Robins withstand a 3rd quarter onslaught from the Longford Tigers before finally winning the game.
The official induction of the âGameâ will take place on 3 July at the Hall of Fame gala function at Wrest Point Casino.
The following Ulverstone and Longford players who participated in the game were in attendance at the media conference Ulverstone or are available for comment:
- Ulverstone â Hall of Fame members: GB âPaddyâ Martin and Garth Smith, and a further 8 players who were members of the premiership team.
