Cameron Milne had a chance to seal victory after the siren for Tasmania, but his kick into the breeze fell short and the side had to settle for a 4.5 (29) to 3.11 (29) tie.
Coach Manny Lynch said there were plenty of positives to take from the match, with another trip to Melbourne to meet Eastern Rangers looming next weekend.
``We want to form some good habits and we did that with our tackling and aggression at the disputed ball,'' Lynch said.
``The boys were battling out of their weight division without question, it was noticeable, the size difference.
``They are big bodies, tall, athletic and extremely talented. The young men they have got, are only young men by birth certificate, they are physical mountains.''
Jacob Gelston, Milne, Josh Green and Marcus Davies were among Tasmania's best players.
