Already without captain Nick Paine -- who is serving a suspension from last year's Premier League preliminary final -- Geappen looks set to miss up to four weeks of football.
The former Devils skipper will visit his doctor today, with surgery to a cartilage problem in his knee the most likely outcome.
Geappen started noticing pain in the joint last Wednesday, and although he may only need minor surgery, it is another frustrating blow to the Roos leader.
A star rebounding defender and midfielder, Geappen struggled with hamstring issues towards the end of the VFL season last year and is eager to kick-start his new coaching career leading from the front.
``It's just a cartilage issue, probably just a bit of wear and tear but I have to wait until I see the doctor about it,'' Geappen said yesterday.
``It's pretty basic surgery, but I have to see if there are any other options first but, if not and I can get in straight away, it should only be a couple of weeks.
``The body is feeling really good and there was no incident where I landed awkwardly or hurt my knee.
``I played three quarters in a practice match and stopped but didn't expect anything to be wrong, but it is only minor and it's just a matter of getting it sorted now.''
Geappen's absence also means the potential explosive showdown with his brother Matthew -- who coaches the Demons -- will now be put on hold until round eight.
Brett had planned on being an assistant under Matthew at the Demons -- until the Clarence coaching position came available at the 11th hour.
``It would have been interesting, obviously we knew we had them straight up,'' he said.
``I'm happy with the line-up, obviously I would like to have myself and `China' [Paine] out there but I'm confident with the group we have.''
Geappen also confirmed ball-magnet Cameron Thurley, who injured his ribs in a practice match a month ago, will not miss Saturday's match.
