Often accused of underperforming with the talent in the team, the Bombers jumped their more-fancied opponents in the first term to skip to a 25-point lead at the first change.
Burnie had just five scoring shots in the first half and although playing coach Justin Plapp had his usual influence on the game, the Bombers kept their noses in front to get on the winners' list early.
Jamie Clippingdale, Joel Mountney and Ty Stewart all produced great lock-down jobs, leaving Whitford a happy man after the match.
``It was a good win for the club, but these boys have copped a little bit over the past year or so for underachieving and they have worked really hard over the pre-season,'' Whitford said.
``They always kept coming, they are a good side but once you get a good start in these early games, sides aren't fit enough to run over the top of you just yet.
``We have eight new guys and some can't train all the time, but they have really gelled together quickly and there is a good spirit around the club at the moment.''
Bombers' Skipper Shane Wager, playing in his first match after a year overseas, led the midfield superbly while Sam Whish-Wilson also stamped his authority.
