Matthew Richardson Medal - Rookie of the Year announced
Devonport Football Club forward, Aaron McNab, has won the Matthew Richardson Medal as the rookie of the year, after a stellar season in the Wrest Point State League.
To be eligible for the medal, players must be under 23 years of age, have played less than 20 games at the commencement of the season in no more than two years of senior football.
McNab began his football career at Sheffield High School and then played Under 17s with the Latrobe Football Club in 2009.
The next year he moved to the Devonport Football Club to play State League football and was then picked in the Tassie Mariners squad in 2011.
Aaron was highly regarded by the Mariners coaching panel led by head coach Matthew Armstrong and was always known for his football ability.
McNab is a highly respected player at the Devonport Football Club and is known for his strong overhead marking and accurate kicking for goal. However, Aaron at times, has been thrown in defence this season and has acquitted himself just as well behind the football.
“Aaron’s year has been exceptional considering that we lost our other key forward, Justin Rodman, for the season at the start of the year,” Devonport Football Club General Manager, Mark Fagan said.
“He has had to carry the bulk of the forward line work often having two opponents working against him. He has definitely shown maturity above his age.”
McNab is also an exceptional A grade cricketer with the Sheffield Cricket Club playing in the Cricket North West competition.
“One day he may have to make a decision on which way he wants to head,” Fagan said.
Tasmanian State League General Manager, Shaun Young, congratulated McNab for his outstanding year and winning the award that recognises one of Tasmania’s greatest footballers, former Richmond star Matthew Richardson.
“The Matthew Richardson Medal is named after one of Tasmania’s modern day greats, and it is great recognition for Aaron to receive the medal for his outstanding year in the State League following on from his years in the Mariners program,” Young said.
