The Riddell Football Umpires are preparing for what promises to be one of the most competitive seasons in the Melton Toyota Riddell District Football Netball League in recent years, and is currently recruiting umpires to officiate in the RDFNL's junior and senior competitions this year.
Riddell Football Umpires President David Hili has announced that Billy Mitchell has been appointed coach of the junior football umpiring panel in the RDFL for the 2013 season.
Hili said that at 18 years of age Mitchell will be one of the youngest specialist umpire coaches in Australian Football.
"Billy's appointment is a reflection of the Association's desire to remain relevant to the younger people coming into umpiring, as well as a reflection of Mitchell's professionalism and skill" Hili commented when announcing Mitchell's appointment.
The Riddell Umpires are targeting men and women of all ages, and is particularly focused on attracting young females to join the ranks.
Female umpire numbers are continually growing, and the umpiring group is proud to involve girls in the sport" Mitchell commented.
"Girls/women’s football is the biggest growth area in football so we encourage and support females to officiate the sport as well"
Field umpire Brit Giles enjoys umpiring, as the passionate footy lover sees umpiring as a great way to keep fit and earn some extra money.
"The great friendships you make along the way are just part of the journey", Giles said.
Mitchell is looking forward to developing the umpires’ skills and supporting them both on and off the field.
"I feel privileged to be coaching both new and existing umpires", Mitchell said.
"I’m really looking forward to mentoring our new recruits and seeing them through to the stage where they can manage a game all on their own."
"It doesn’t happen overnight, but is a memorable moment for any umpire".
A first-year umpire can earn in excess of $1000 for the season.
The Melton Toyota Riddell District FNL home and away season commences in mid April. Those interested in becoming an umpire should contact Glen Shilling on 0408 507 293 or visit www.riddellumpires.com.au
