never write off the talented Islanders from Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands
and Niue, all of whom will make for a highly competitive and physical
competition.
The Medallists from previous Games are:
Gold
Silver Bronze
1998 New Zealand
Fiji Australia
2002 New Zealand
Fiji South Africa
2006
It is proposed that the Rugby 7s competition will be staged at
Telstra Dome in Docklands. Only the top 16 Commonwealth countries are
eligible to compete at the Games, with qualification determined by
world rankings following the 2005 Rugby 7s World Cup. Competition will
be fierce as 11 of the top 14 world ranked teams are from Commonwealth
nations.
The Rugby 7s competition will be held in accordance with the rules
of the International Rugby Board (IRB) and will follow a format similar
to that of all Rugby 7s World Series events. Teams will be allocated
into four pools with teams within a pool playing each other in a
round-robin format. Performance within the pools will determine each
team's progression through to the final rounds.
A total of 42 games will be played over four sessions of competition
with spectators able to see all 16 teams play in a single session
during the pool rounds.
