Four teams contested AFL Victoria's inaugural Youth Girls Champions Trophy on Saturday. Jacana, East Malvern, Sunbury and Berwick played in a round robin format, before contesting semi finals and a grand final at JJ Holland Park in Kensington. The event was a great opportunity to bring together girls from different competitions, allowing them to make new friends and test out their skills against their counterparts from other parts of Melbourne.
There was fantastic support from families and friends of the girls, as they slugged it out for 4 hours of football. Games were very competitive and there some excellent individual performances. Berwick, after defeating East Malvern in the semi final, overcame a tiring Sunbury in the Grand Final to take the Champions Trophy title.
Three players drew for the Player of the Carnival Award with each awarded six votes from the umpires:
- Mandi Watts (Sunbury)
- Alicia Eva (East Malvern)
- Olivia Storer (Jacana)
AFL Victoria hopes this positive start will ensure that the event remains on the Youth Girls calendar next year.
