The inaugural Eastern Youth Girls grand final was contested by the competition’s two standout performers in East Malvern and Chirnside Park. Both teams could only be separated by less than one percent, so close were they in ability. East Malvern came out firing early, controlling the ball to score a few early goals. Chirnside Park hit back in the second, capitalising on a building wind to take the lead. In an arm wrestle of a third quarter, Chirnside Park defended well into the wind for most of the quarter, with East Malvern able to kick a goal later in the term to take a four point lead into the last term. The final quarter summed up the competitiveness of both teams, with neither team able to break away. It was East Malvern however who were able to penetrate Chirnside Park’s defence and overpower the wind to convert an important major in the last term. When the final siren sounded, East Malvern were five points (7.4-6.5) ahead to claim the 2009 Eastern Youth Girls premiership. Chirnside Park’s Bethany Henley was awarded Best on Ground.
