Seven weeks of fierce competition between four Geelong based Youth Girls teams will culminate this weekend when an undefeated Leopold take on Clonard College in the inaugural Geelong Youth Girls competition Grand Final.
In the semi finals on Sunday, Leopold proved too strong for South Barwon and recorded their seventh consecutive victory. The third placed Clonard College in fielding their strongest side of the season, scored a win over Sacred Heart College and will be no pushover for the red hot favourites.
Based at the Geelong Falcons TAC Cup club's home at Highton Reserve, nearly ninety girls have become the first girls in Geelong to play in a Youth Girls competition. As expected, there has been some exceptional talent on display. AFL Victoria Regional Development Manager, John Edsall, is very pleased with the weekly improvement shown by all the girls individually and in their standard of teamwork.
For many of the girls this is their first opportunity to play community football, whilst for a handful of others who have played junior football, the competition has provided them with the opportunity to continue playing the game.
AFL Victoria hopes to attract at least another two clubs for the 2010 season as we look to expand the competition.
