The 2009 Victorian Youth Girls Championships saw four teams play in three preliminary rounds in exactly the same format as the boys competing in AFL Victoria' Metropolitan Junior Championships. Participating were one hundred girls from teams representing the Western, Northern, South Eastern (incorporating the Eastern competition) and Bendigo competitions. Aptly, the 2009 Championships began in AFL Women’s Round.
Games were held at various venues across Melbourne in Sunshine, Bulleen Park, Hurstbridge Park, Dower Park Reserve in Bendigo, as well as the MCG before the Queen's Birthday match between Collingwood and Melbourne. All matches were played with high intensity, good sportsmanship and the girls showed off their fantastic football skills.
A huge thank you to all the volunteer coaches, team managers, selectors and parents who have worked with the teams, without your assistance the Championships would not have been a success.
The Victorian Youth Girls Championships Grand Final will be held at 10am on Saturday June 27 between the South Eastern and Western teams at Box Hill City Oval.
South Eastern girls to watch out for include original Youth Girls Alicia Eva (East Malvern) and Chloe Peers (Hallam), captain Rebecca Pearce (Berwick) and Youth Girls newcomer, Ellie Blackburn (Berwick). For the western girls, 2008 Victorian captain Brooke Surgeon, rover Mandi Watts and former junior footballer, Tayla Zammit have been very impressive.
