The fourth western Youth Girls grand final was played between Sunbury and Melbourne University's Under 18s on Saturday. Whilst Sunbury entered the game undefeated this season, Melbourne University looked to have the form to pip Sunbury at the post in the final game of the year.
A goalless first quarter saw some exceptional skills on display as both teams struggled to attain control of the play. Youth Girls Academy rovers Renae Schwarze and Mandi Watts were stand outs for Melbourne University and Sunbury respectively. By half time, scores were locked at 1-3 each, with neither team prepared to give an inch. 2007 Victorian representative Candace Smith lifted for Sunbury whilst Melbourne University's defence was dominated by some brillant marking by Anna Calder.
With respected writer Martin Flanagan looking on from the sidelines, Sunbury was able to create a minor break, scoring the only goal for the third quarter. Whilst Melbourne University appeared to throw everything they had at Sunbury, it took the brillant defensive work of Sunbury co-captains Alex Agrotis and Brooke Surgeon, to withstand the onslaught and keep Melbourne University scoreless.
The final quarter saw Melbourne University edge closer, scoring their only major for the second half through some tireless team work. Sunbury however, wore down a desperate and gallant Melbourne University in the closing stages of the game to secure a 14 point victory. With many Sunbury players also playing school football together for Sunbury College, it was their second premiership for the week, after they had earlier claimed the VSSSA Senior Girls’ State Championship.
Both teams should be congratulated for the manner in which they fought the game out and in how they conducted themselves across the season. Sunbury's Brooke Surgeon and Melbourne University's Monique Bastiaan were awarded Best on Ground by the umpires.
