AFL Victoria's newest Youth Girls teams, Jacana and Lalor Stars, produced an exciting contest last weekend in a curtain raiser to the Victorian Women's Football League's annual Victoria Metro vs. Country match at NAB Oval, home of the VFL's Northern Bullants. As part of Community Football Weekend duties, Melbourne player and 2007 Victorian metro. captain, Jack Grimes, addressed the girls during the game breaks after tossing the coin to get the game underway.
Over at ABD Group Oval (formerly known as City Oval) in Coburg, Mercy College and St Albans battled out a fiercely contested game in a curtain raiser to the VFL's Coburg vs. Collingwood game. Former Coburg player and rising Richmond star, Jake King, was on hand to share his football highlights with the girls and got the game underway with the toss of the coin. Whilst the undefeated Mercy College won the hitout convincingly, the highlight of the day for many of the girls was having Collingwood players kicking the football back to them after their goals were scored.
Down at Casey Fields VFL Oval, East Malvern and Cranbourne, produced an enthralling match that saw Cranbourne take the honours by two points. In the third match of a series held on the VFL ground at Casey, the big ground got the better of East Malvern who couldn't convert late in the game.
AFL Victoria will continue to work closely with VFL clubs to provide further opportunities for the girls to experience big ground action across the year.
