Alicia Eva was named Captain at the 2009 Victorian Youth Girls Under 18 Team Jumper Presentation Night last night. Brooke Surgeon (Sunbury) and Georgia Punton (Noble Park) rounded out the leadership team that will guide the Victorian team at the third annual Youth Girls Interstate Challenge to be played on the Gold Coast from September 19-21.
With over one hundred guests in attendance, East Malvern's Eva, who is one of two remaining Youth Girls from Australia's first ever Youth Girls competition along with Hallam's Chloe Peers, and her team proudly accepted their jumpers from Australia's two most decorated senior players, Debbie Lee and Shannon McFerran. Earlier, Lee and McFerran shared their experiences in football, playing for Victoria and the many off field benefits they've enjoyed from their involvement in the game.
The three touring umpires, Jayde Daly, Kimberley Boyce and Penny Godsell, accepted their kits from the touring Umpire Coach, the distinguished Kylie Welsh, a veteran of over three hundred games.
The Victorian team will see twelve girls make their under 18 Victorian debut, whilst fifteen members of the twenty-four strong touring party are graduates of community based junior football. A relatively young squad this year, seven girls were members of the inaugural Victorian Secondary School Girls Under 16 team that contested an exhibition event at the School Sport Australia Football Championships this year.
Game one of the Interstate Challenge will be played on Saturday September 19 at 2:30pm, whilst game two will be played on Monday September 21 at 11am. Both games will be played at Coolangatta AFC on the Gold Coast.
