Scoop's Draft Analysis - 2009

Weegs Warriors

Aldridge with the 2nd pick is right up there with Barge Arse as the clanger of the draft. Maggette, Wilcox and Williams all seemed to be taken too high. On the positive, Parker and Kenyon Martin were big steals along with Paul at 4 when he is averaging 1.4. An ordinary drafting performance by the new kid on the block, it would seem that he will need to trade well to match it with the big boys.

BTR

Solid draft from the two time winner. Hinrich, Ginobili, Turkoglu, Marbury and Camby were the main steals of the draft. Wade and Illgauskas qualify as the only clangers and only marginially. The Scoop Quotient indicates that BTR will be a contender again, throw in the usual 5 or so dodgy trades and BTR may hold the cup aloft again!

No Tex Greenhorns

At the time of writing this 5 players have already parted company with this team. The main trae agnde was Billups for Raheed Wallace and Andre Miller - a pretty good results for No Tex. Billups and JR Smith rate as the best steals of the draft with the since traded Anthony Parker the biggest clanger. The Parker for Chandler trade looks a good deal for this team. No Tex were probably a bit trade happy last season and were caught napping too often on the free agents board. They are much better than last place and will be determined to make the playoffs.

A clanger is defined as having a Scoop Quotient (SQ) of -20 or worse, a steal has an SQ of +20 or better. Summary: Old Timers Nash and O'Neal were SFO's biggest steals but these were more than off set by the big clangers of Al Horford, Luol Deng and Zac Randolph at picks 4,5 and 6. Sessions, since dropped was a further clanger, giving SFO one of the lowest Scoop Quotients. On paper this looks a balanced team but a team with quite a few question marks. The afore mentioned Nash, Randolph and Deng can be injury prone and may see a change of role or even franchise this season. SFO are always competitive and a high trader - they may need to be to stay competitive thus season.

Anklebreakers21

A clanger is defined as having a Scoop Quotient (SQ) of -20 or worse, a steal has an SQ of +20 or better. Summary: Bosh and Prince qualify as the biggest clangers of Anklebreakers draft. Hamilton and Jsoh Smith look to have been taken a little high also. The Truth and Kidd were the biggest steals at picks 3 and 4, with Diaw, Blatche and Finley qualify at the latter stages of the draft. Anklebreakers are always in the mix although they seem to just fall short at the business end of the season despite having a generally good squads - think Houston. Will they be a contender this season - I think they have problems that need to be addressed via trading and then a top 4 place is a possibility.

Bad Boys

Well it was clanger city for the Bad Boys come draft time. Picks 1 and 2 qualified as major clangers and only Joe Johnson and Sammy Dalambert were non clangers in the first 10 picks! Either the Bad Boys have some good inside info on a few players or they are doomed to be also runs this season. The worst Scoop Quotient thus far!

Tour De Force

A solid draft for last years runners-up earning them the top Scoop Quotient through 10 teams. The tour will be looking to go one better this season and it looks like they are of to a great start having drafted so well.

Venom

The Howard's (Josh and Dwight) were the major clangers for the most annoying team in the league. Lewis rates as a good steal with most of the rest not too far away from where they should have been drafted. A scoop quotient in the positive is a good effort and the Venom look to have a reasonable team. They will be out to hoodwink other owners via an avalanche of trade offers - if they can find an unsuspecting owner they could build their team into something but don't make the mistake of thinking the Venom might actually give up something of value in any trade offer!

Stat Sheet Stuffers

Thaddeus Young, Leandro Barbosa,Carlos Boozer and Kevin Durant were the major clangers with Shawn Marion and Ronnie Brewer the best of the steals. Stat Sheet Stuffers have lived and died by the draft over the years and whilst a positive Scoop Quotient is good it doesnt look high enough to challenge the big boys without some serious trading. Looks like triple S is headed for the consolation finals once more.

Brawlers

Some big clangers for the reigning champs, most notably, Milsap, Alston and Jermaine O'Neal. Oden and Harris rate as the best steals but with a Scoop Quotient of -35.73 the Brawlers will need to do some fine trading if they are to go back to back.

Whiteline Frenzy

David Lee isright up there with Barge-Arse as the clanger of the draft. Mike Miller also rates very highly in the clanger dept. Bibby and Collison were also decent clangers. Brad Miller and Shane Battier rate as the best steals. If Bats is your best steal you haven't had a great draft. The consortium looks like it will need to trade to improve and looking at the draft rigmorole that they have placed on themselves that looks like a tall order. Last place again is not out of the question for this lot.
