2019s Best Stories

With 2019 coming to an end we have decided to share what we believe our top 5 moments from a jammed packed 2019 were. In no particular order..

SIPT Winning North Canterbury Event of the Year at the NC Sport & Rec Trust Awards:

The 29th Edition of the SIPT was a big one; 44 teams, coming from as far south as Alexandra, and as North as Blenheim. We are pretty close to peak capacity so we cannot wait for the new Stadium Waimakariri to be built in 2021.

The tournament brings so much into the North Canterbury region, and next year is the 30th edition and we can't wait to make the event bigger and better.

u13 Maroon Boys Winning u13 South Island Region Tournament

The u13 boys took home the u13 regional tournament for the first time ever in NCs history. This was a massive achievement and a reflection on all the hard work, improvement and fun the players had throughout the 2019 season. With 4 u13 boys club teams, and 6 u13 reps teams in 2019 we expect this age group to only continue to grow and develop in 2020.

Club Success

2019 saw NC enter 15 teams in to the CBA club competition. We had 5 teams reach their respective grades finals, with the Women's Premier, u15 Boys White and Men's u20 winning their finals. It was only in 2016 that we had 8 club teams playing, and this continued growth is expected in 2020 where we are expecting nearly 20 teams to be entered.

Local players on the International Stage

North Canterbury locals, Charlotte Whittaker and Esra McGoldrick were named in the Tall Ferns William Jones Cup team in July. Unfortuntately, Charlotte was injured, however she was replaced by another NC local Mary Goulding. All 3 players have suited up for the Women's Premier team over the years. Charlotte is plying her trade at Colorado University, while Mary is playing professionally overseas in Europe, and Esra is gearing up for another season of the NZ WNBL in 2020.

Additionally, Kaiapoi High School student, Helen Mathews represented New Zealand at the 3X3 u18 Asia Cup.

Waitaha Representation

2019 is the 3rd year of Waitaha, and NC had our biggest representation yet. We had 30 players represent Waitaha Canterbury, from u15-u19s at National representative tournaments throughout the year. The u15 age group was especially well represented with 13 players, and 3 coaches involved.
