2019 SIPT Day 2 Recap

Day 2’s 8am starts were treated with a surprise at Mega with the much needed presence of the Coffee Culture MoBull Coffee Cart which set the scene for the day with some brilliant display of talent and some epic finishes as teams pushed for playoffs.

Today’s biggest movement happened in the boys yr 7/8 development grade where the 2 pools of 6 where vying for semi-final spots. Pool B brought some excitement with NC Mountain Lions upsetting previously undefeated Pioneer 66-63 to put Pool B in a 3 way tie for 1st place. Unfortunately, the NC Mountain Lions gallant effort was left short, as their big loss to the NC Cheetahs the previous night coming back to haunt them in points differential. NC Cheetahs qualified top of pool B while Pioneer finished 2nd leaving themselves the tough task of facing the dominant NC Siberian Tigers, who extended their run to the final. The NC Cheetahs took out the all NC Semi against the NC Jaguars, and will face the rampant Siberian Tigers in the final tomorrow.

Today saw the yr 5/6 girls’ get on court with the NC Lynx and Pioneer playing a double header round robin before they each get a crack a yr 5/6 boys development team tomorrow. We are looking forward to seeing how the girls compete.

The yr 7/8 girl’s development saw a back and forth battle between the NC Pumas and NC Panthers this afternoon, the Panthers down a key player after an injury yesterday competed, but went down (47 - 54). They get a chance for payback when the two teams meet in tomorrow’s final.

The boys yr 7/8 A grade semi-final’s will feature the NC Tarheels v Pioneer in the first game. Pioneer narrowly avoided an upset from Marlborough who were up by 1 with a quarter to go. The Marlborough boys ran out of puff in a brilliant game, with the final score 60-50. Defending champs Eastside will face off with Cowles/Gators. Our super reliable Instagram poll has many predicting a NC Tarheels v Eastside final, we will see how accurate our followers are after the mornings semi-finals.

The 5/6 boy’s development grade have continued with their round robin play which concludes tomorrow. Horomaka Young Bucks and Cowles have sustained their strong play from yesterday and are well clear of the pack. The NC Tigers and NC Bearcats had a belter of a game this evening with it going down to the wire and only 1 point separating them.

The 5/6 boy’s A grade final will feature Pioneer vs Horomaka Thunder. Horomaka Thunder will go in as favourites after winning in pool play. Canterbury Ram’s Legend Dave Langrell has his Horomaka boys clicking on all cylinders, and their transition game is a thing of beauty.

Today’s supporters created some exciting but nervous energy in many of the games that went down to the wire. Nails were being chewed, and hair was turning grey for many in the crowd.

Tomorrow’s playoff games will bring close to yet another exciting SIPT, with the Awards Ceremony at Ohoka starting around 3:30pm upon the conclusion of the boys A final.
