2019 SIPT Day 1 Recap

56 games kicked off the 29th annual North Canterbury Basketball South Island Primary Tournament (SIPT). This years edition has 43 teams competing across 7 grades, with teams ranging from Alexandra (shout out for their first time at SIPT) all the way north to Marlborough.

Games today have seen some epic battles on court with the Casebrook Intermediate Boys beating the NC Bobcats with a game winning FT with 10 seconds left. That was followed up by a cracker of a game between the NC Lions and Pioneer in the Yr 5/6 Boys, resulting in a 56 all draw. In their first SIPT game, Alexandra came agonisingly close to beating Mid Canterbury Green in their Pool B clash going down 45 - 47.

Eastside Scorpions have started strong in their defence of their 2018 title going 2 for 2 against Gators and Mid Canterbury Gold. Likewise, NC Tarheels have defended home court so far dispatching Cowles and Marlborough comfortably. On the girl’s side, both the NC Pumas and Panthers have started strong in the girls development while the NC Wildcats, coached by Taneisha Nutira are looking to continue on from the last 3 years and take home the trophy.

The day has seen great sportsmanship from coaches, parents and the players. Basketball New Zealand’s Let Them Play campaign is being promoted throughout the tournament and it has been great to see it upheld.

With over 400 kids participating over the weekend, many in their first basketball tournament, it is great to see so many smiles on the kids faces regardless of the results. The improvement of the players over the weekend will be enormous if today is anything to go by!

The NC Sausage sizzle and Bacon Buttie fundraiser was a hit, with many supports and players munching down on some quality Heller’s product before, after and during games. Coffee Culture Rangiora will be providing a much needed caffeine hit to those supporters throughout the day tomorrow at Mega.

Make sure to check out all the results here, and come down and check out the action across the Waimak district tomorrow where pool play and round robin wraps up and we move in to the playoff section of the tournament.
