FINAL QUARTER STUMBLE HURTS HEAT

The Appliance Shed Harbour Heat went blow for blow and point for point with the ecogise Nelson Giants at the North Shore Events Centre, only to fall off the pace in the final quarter to lose by 7 points against one of the favourites in the New Zealand Community Trust National Basketball League.

Led by the scoring of Corey Webster and the all round energy of Mychal Green, the Heat started strongly and led by two at the half time break. Daryl Cartwright was providing some much needed strength in the paint and with Daniel Munday chiming in with some key scoring plays, the good sized crowd at the Furnace were anticipating a home win over one of the league favourites.

The third quarter saw more of the same with the sides trading blows, more often than not a Phil Jones three was followed by a Webster reply as the score stayed tight throughout with the Giants leading by one heading into the final quarter.

It was then that the shooting statistics headed in the wrong direction for the home side. Shots were ringing out and the Giants slowly edged away and with Tony Rampton dominating the boards and Jones deadly from outside the visitors made it two wins in two nights in Auckland.

Best for the Heat were Green (who played the entire 40 minutes), Webster and Cartwright while Munday contributed some valuable points and direction.

For the visitors it was the Jones show on offence with Phil and Daryl combining for 44 points, many of them from outside the arc while Rampton finished with a double double of 18 points and 14 rebounds.
