Heat out as Cougars Strike Fire

New kids on the block the Bartercard Christchurch Cougars have won through to a semi final date with the defending champions, Waikato Pistons, after beating Appliance Shed Harbour Heat 106-98 in thrilling overtime NZCT National Basketball League Quarterfinal in Christchurch tonight.

The Cougars warmed up for the thrilling finish taking the first quarter 25-15 with Trenton Wurtz hitting a three on the buzzer. The Heat took the second quarter 24-21 to reduce the Cougars lead to seven points, 46-39 at halftime.

The Heat enjoyed the better of the third quarter with BJ Antony becoming more of a presence inside both at the defensive and offensive end and ended up taking the quarter 29-22 to leave the teams deadlocked 68-68 going into the fourth.

The excitement levels and noise went ballistic inside Cowles Stadium in the fourth as both teams fought hard to get the win. The excitement was reaching its climax as Paoara Winitana (38) hit a two from an impossible angle with :16 seconds to play. The Heat then brought the ball up the court and had two three point attempts and two offensive boards before Corey Webster hit a three from the corner with two Cougars in his face to level the scores with a second to play. The Cougars called a time out and then had the inbound from halfway with time only for a pass, catch and shoot which fell to Winitana. Winitana’s three point attempt hit the rim, bounced up and came back down on the rim again and fell away from the basket. 87-87 the score was left at full time.

Overtime proved as exciting and close until Daniel Munday shot a three point attempt air ball that the Cougars rebounded and in the resulting play Gerard Bowden hit a three to put the Cougars ahead by five with :50 seconds to play. Munday missed another three point attempt in the Heats next play which leaved the Heat fouling and hoping for a miracle. No miracle came and the Cougars ran out 106-98 winners.

For the Cougars Winitana had a strong game offensively leading all scorers with 38. Bowden chimed in with 22 while Tim Behrendorff was strong at both ends of the court taking a 20 point, 15 rebound double double.
