Breakers Move to the Top

At 34 he's meant to be passed his best. Instead evergreen Aussie CJ Bruton continues to deliver the game-winning NBL performances for the NZ Breakers.

The former Boomers star plucked another one out of his trick bag on Sunday night against former team the Sydney Kings, as Bruton's individual brilliance very much sparked the Kiwi club to a 94-80 victory in the Harbour City.

Paced by Bruton's game-high 23 points (8/12 FG, 5/8 3PT), the Breakers survived a storming Kings comeback, made the big plays down the stretch and went top equal on the Aussie NBL table with a 7-2 record. The North Shore club is now level with the Wollongong Hawks and a game ahead of the Cairns Taipans whom they host on Thursday night.

Bruton's backcourt buddy Kevin Braswell, who took the game over late in the final quarter after the Kings got within four, said he continued to be in awe of the displays the veteran was producing.

"He did amazing, man," said the former Georgetown Hoya who picked his own game up after struggling with a wrist injury to post eight points and seven assists.

"It's fun to play with him and at the same it's also enjoyable sometimes to just watch what he brings. At 34 he's still doing it. He's amazing."

Bruton hit back to back threes early in the final quarter to quell a Kings run, and then when the hosts made one more surge late in the piece he was smart enough to defer to Braswell who was in masterful distribution form as the Kiwis ran off seven straight points to seal the deal.

It was the second win for the Breakers in Sydney this year after they opened the season with a similar victory against the competition comeback boys.

The Breakers had looked to be cruising when they led by 13 at the major break on Sunday night, but had to show some real composure down the stretch as the Kings rallied to get as close as four points late in the final quarter.

Braswell said the Breakers always felt like they had the better of the Kings.

"You know what it is? We never panic now - we all believe in one another," said the Baltimore-born point guard. "We all believe at some point somebody is going to make the plays to break the game open."

The Kings lost forward Graeme Dann early when he spat out four teeth after copping an accidental blow by Mika Vukona, but gave a good account of themselves as they battled back into the game in the second half.

However they had no answer to Bruton who continued to knock down big shots against a team he once led to the NBL title.

A strangely off-target Kirk Penney added 16 points (5/17 FG, 1/6 3PT) for the Breakers but did have eight rebounds and two steals, while big Gary Wilkinson had another solid all-round game with 16 points (7/11 FG) and seven rebounds.

Mika Vukona added 14 points and 10 boards for the Breakers while Braswell edged back towards his customary standard with his game-winning turn down the stretch. It was a good sign, too, that the Kiwis were able to prevail even when supersub Tom Abercrombie had an usually quiet night, able to make just two of his 10 field-goal attempts.

Braswell said the importance of a fourth road win from five attempts this season could not be underestimated.

"It's not about the style - we'll take any win on the road anyway we can get it. They're not going to be pretty all the time," he said.

"We started off really well tonight, but they pulled it back because they're the home team and they had the crowd behind them. But we feel as though if we stick together we're not going to have any problems."

The Breakers had looked to be cruising at halftime as they built an eight-point lead after the first quarter into a 13-point advantage by the major break.

With the Kiwi club dominating the boards, working their offence efficiently and forcing the Kings out of their comfort zone with their push-up defence, the game threatened to break open with the lead nudging the 20-point mark late in the half.

But a strong Kings finish got their deficit back to manageable proportions by the break and an even better third quarter - led by an a 10-point outburst from Ben Madgen - got the hosts as close as seven heading into the final period.

The Kings got a solid 20-point display (7/16 FG) from new import Patrick Sanders, while Madgen's career-high 19 (7/10 FG) showed the young Aussie guard could be a big-time contributor this season. Elusive big man Julian Khazzouh added 17 points and 12 boards for the hosts, but fouled out late in the game.

The Breakers return to New Zealand on Monday and will have a short turnaround before hosting the in-form 6-2 Taipans, including veteran Tall Black Phill Jones, on Thursday.

NZ Breakers 94 (CJ Bruton 23, Kirk Penney 16, Gary Wilkinson 16, Mika Vukona 14) Sydney Kings 80 (Patrick Sanders 20, Ben Madgen 19, Julian Khazzouh 17 Taj McCullough 10). 1Q: 18-26; HT: 39-52; 3Q: 59-66
