Heat Reserves Cement Top Spot

Despite the presence of Paul Henare the Breakers Academy came up just short against the Harbour Heat Reserves losing a tight encounter 79-78, a game in which the lead changed no fewer than 21 times.. The result secures top spot for the Heat, unbeaten in the round robin section of the Supercity competition, the Academy finishing second with an 8-1 record. Both teams qualify for the top section in the play-offs.

Momentum swings were numerous in the first half, Heat leading 22-21 at quarter time but Breakers Academy in front 43-36 at half time a lead that was to turn out to be the biggest of the game. Sam King had 9 first half points for the Breakers whilst Dan Ryan with 16 points was proving a handful for the home teams defence.

The Academy maintained their lead in the third period but only just as Ryan and Hayden Allen with seven points apiece sliced the lead to a single point, 58-57 at three quarter time.

The Breakers maintained a slender lead in the early stages of the final period but with 5:54 left on the clock Allen sunk a pair of free throws to give the Heat a 65-64 advantage. A Zac Fitzgerald basket and another pair of freebies from Allen stretched the Heat lead to five points with 5 minutes remaining. To compound the Breakers problems forward Morgan Nathan fouled out after securing 4 points and 7 rebounds. With 3:44 remaining the Heat still led 73-69 but a pair of baskets by King and Adam Dunstan either side of a Fitzgerald basket saw the lead reduced to two points with 1:58 remaining. Paul Henare converted a drive on the next play and a Breakers win looked a possibility. The Heat however scored on their next two plays via Allen and Dawson but Sam King then made a three point play to leave the game in the balance. A miss on the next possession by the Heat gave the Breakers one last opportunity but smothering defence by the Heat secured them the win, leaving the Breakers to rue a missed opportunity.

Final Score;

Heat Reserves 79 (Dan Ryan 27, Hayden Allen 24, Zac Fitzgerald 12) Breakers Academy 78 (Sam King 19, Inga Solofuti 14, Paul Henare 13, Adam Dunstan 10)
