  • Based on need: The plans have been matched to the demonstrated needs of the sports and the community allowing for future growth. They were developed by specialist architects and planners with sports, Te Atiawa, New Plymouth District Council and New Plymouth Boys’ High School.
  • Boost to community health and wellbeing: The hub will boost our community’s physical activity levels to improve health and wellbeing. It will be a place to play, connect and compete. It will serve the community across the generations and help New Plymouth become a sustainable lifestyle capital.
  •  Space to play: The site was selected by experts because of its size, central location and contour. With thousands of school students within walking distance, connections to Pukekura Park and the central city the visible, accessible site hs existing sporting and community connections.
  • Access: The site is close to major transport routes and planning specialists will be working with the designers and New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi to complete a detailed transportation assessment including parking and traffic flow. Planning and scheduling of events, together with accessibility for public and active transport options will also ease potential congestion.
  • Costs: The first phase, including the indoor sports hub, hockey turf and site establishment and infrastructure works are $62.5 million. If the Multi-Sport Hub is adopted into the NPDC long term plan this will be a foundation investment that will allow funding to be secured from a range of sources.

Sport Taranaki CEO Michael Carr said the project was a once in a generation opportunity that would have far-reaching community and health benefits.

“The health of the community is at its heart. Our community infrastructure has been built when our leaders showed courage and vision and built for the long term...now we have another chance for a step change for the city that is needed now, but will become part of the community fabric in the future."
