Girls High End Top Year

New Plymouth Girls' High School Junior A claimed their third straight Taranaki junior secondary schoolgirls' (year 9 and 10) premier basketball title last Friday night.

Girls' High beat Hawera High School 75-58 in the final at New Plymouth's Francis Douglas Memorial College.

It capped off a stellar season for Girls' High after their win in the Taranaki women's reserve grade competition a couple of weeks ago.

After a tight first quarter against Hawera, the scores were level at 11-11. In the second quarter, Girls' High pulled ahead by 10 points and the South Taranaki side were unable to claw their way back into the game.

Francis Douglas ended New Plymouth Boys' High School Celtics chances of claiming their third straight title.

The game was level at halftime, but after the Spartans gained a 15-point lead in the third quarter, the Celtics had their work cut out for them to get back into the game.

Louis Coetzee top-scored for Francis Douglas with 25 points, while Dane Brooks shone for Celtics also scoring 25 points along with 18 rebounds.
