BBNZ Secondary School Nationals Day 3

Boys High School tested their luck again today when they met up with Otago Boys High School in their second to last game in pool play at the BBNZ Secondary School Nationals Tournament being held in Palmerston North this week. Trailing the whole game they were down by 8 at the end of the first period, 5 at the end of the half and two at the end of the third. The only time they took the lead was in overtime after the score was all squared up 60-60 at the end of regular time.

Matt Wallace came out firing in overtime and sunk two quick long range baskets closely followed by a lay up from Lachie Fenwick off a steal to give New Plymouth a 6 point lead. Under pressure Otago were forced to foul putting New Plymouth to the line. Derek Albertsen made sure of his free throws and the game was pretty much sealed with a minute to go. The final result was 70-62 in New Plymouth's favour.

The New Plymouth Girls played Rotorua Girls this afternoon and struggled to gain any sort of momentum in the game. Going inside to Greer Paterson did work from time to time and an excellent hussling game from Teresa Hunt wasn't enough to secure them the win. They eventually went down 68-51 to the stronger Rotorua team.

New Plymouth Boys met Massey in their final pool game this evening. They were too good for the Auckland team winning 99-74. Coach David Bublitz had the luxury of playing his bench in this game and they showed there was plenty of potential for the years to come. Aaron Ransfield, Jordan Harries and Jaron Doyle combined to keep the pressure on Massey allowing the New Plymouth team slowly build their winning margin.

The Boys ended up number one in their pool and cross over on Thursday to play Wellington College for a top four spot in the tournament. New Plymouth have beaten Wellington twice already this year setting themselves up for a good contest.
