The boys competed against 14 other teams from Hastings to Wellington aiming to finish in the top 6 cut off point to allow them to go on to the National Tournament. The girls competed in the 11 team tournament.

After winning their first 4 games, BHS secured a place in the top 4 teams ensuring they would travel on to the Nationals. The boys finished up 4th after two closely fought matches against St Johns from Hastings 53-64 and Mana College 59-63, last years number 2 team in New Zealand.

GHS also secured a top 4 spot and finished up 3rd defeating Mana College convincingly 61-46.

Two other teams from New plymouth Basketball Association Inc competed in the Premiership tournament. Francis Douglas Memorial College finished up in 14th place and Sacred Heart Girls College ended up in 8th spot. This meant both teams won't be going onto the National Tournament.

The Secondary School Nationals are scheduled to occur in Palmerston North August 22-27. The 48 team tournament is the highlight in the BBNZ calendar with the future of New Zealand basketball on full display over the course of the week.
