Tough Day at the Nationals for U19 Men and U17 Women

The U19 Mens’ team came up against Harbour in their first game of the BBNZ National U19 Tournament being held in Tauranga over Queens Birthday weekend. Coached by Kenny Stone of Auckland Pirates NBL team and supported by Judd Flavell, Breakers Assistant Coach, it took till the end of the third period for Harbour to obtain any sort of dominance over the New Plymouth team, who are attending their first ever National U19 Tournament.

In the end, New Plymouth struggled to contain Harbour’s 6’8” centre who dominated boards at both ends of the court and put back a lot of two foot shots for easy points during the course of the game.

Down by 14 at half time, New Plymouth clawed their way back to within four during the third period while the Harbour Centre took a spell on the bench. A series of missed lay ups in the fourth period allowed Harbour to stretch their lead again and the game finished with a 13 point spread with New Plymouth going down 67-80.

They face Counties Manukau 9:00am Saturday morning in a must win game to keep their hope alive of finishing in the top eight for the Tournament. Harbour beat Counties Manukau 95-54 earlier in the day.

The New Plymouth U17 Womens team are away in the North Harbour competing in the National U17 Tournament. Two tough games on Friday saw them come out on the wrong side of the ledger with a 60-79 loss to Waikato and a 52-70 loss to Nelson.

The Women meet Harbour B at 9:00am Saturday morning to work out the third and fourth spots in their pool.
