Basketball Mid Canterbury – Women’s Grade Rules & Regulations

1. Eligibility

  • Open to all female players aged Year 9 at high school and above.

  • Players must be registered through GameDay before taking the court. (Including one day players)

  • Teams may include up to 10 players on their roster.

  • Players must play at least 3 games to qualify for finals

  • All late-season ring-ins (after Round 1) must be approved by the competition organiser ahead of time and well before the game in question.


2. Game Format

  • Games are 4 × 10-minute quarters (stop clock).

  • 2-minute quarter breaks and 3-minute halftime.

  • 5 players on court per team.

  • Minimum of 4 players needed to start the game.


3. Scoring & Results

  • Standard basketball scoring applies: 2-point field goals, 3-point shots, and free throws.

  • Win = 2 points, Loss = 1 point, Default = 0 points.

  • Ladder determined by total points, then points differential.


4. Uniforms & Equipment

  • Teams are encouraged to wear matching singlets or shirts with clearly visible numbers.

  • Bibs will be provided if teams have the same colour.

  • No jewellery or watches allowed on court.


5. Fouls & Free Throws

  • Personal fouls and team fouls will be recorded.

  • After 5 team fouls per half, opponents shoot 2 free throws.

  • Players foul out after 5 personal fouls.


6. Timeouts & Substitutions

  • Each team is allowed:

    • 2 timeouts in the first half

    • 3 timeouts in the second half (45 seconds each)

  • Substitutions may be made on a dead ball.

  • Players may only enter the court when called in by officials.


7. Behaviour & Sportsmanship

  • Zero tolerance for abusive or disrespectful behaviour toward referees, players, or spectators.

  • Technical fouls may result in suspension from the following game. (Behaviour, On-Court Infractions & Technical Fouls) 

  • Teams are expected to maintain a positive and social atmosphere.


8. Defaults & Forfeits

  • If a team cannot field 4 players within 5 minutes of the scheduled start time, the game is a default.

  • Teams must notify organisers at least 24 hours in advance if they cannot play.


9. Duty Team Responsibilities

  • The team with a bye is required to do bench duty.

  • Ensure the game clock and scoresheet are accurate.


10. Competition Spirit

  • This grade is designed to be social but competitive, encouraging participation and enjoyment.

  • All disputes will be handled by the BBMC Competition Committee, whose decision is final. (Behaviour, On-Court Infractions & Technical Fouls)
