Band Rules – Yr 3 & 4 Miniball
Band Rules – Yr 3 & 4 Miniball
Why we do this:
In Year 3 & 4 Miniball, players are still learning the basics of basketball. Using coloured bands helps ensure:
-
Everyone gets a turn to handle the ball.
-
Games are safe and enjoyable.
-
Players develop confidence and skills in fair matchups.
Rules:
-
Every player on court wears a coloured band.
-
Players may only defend and steal the ball from someone wearing the same-coloured band.
-
Players cannot block, steal, or guard anyone with a different coloured band.
If a player breaks this rule and steals the ball from the wrong band:
-
The on-court coach blows the whistle.
-
Remind the defender they can only guard their own colour.
-
Return the ball to the other team on the sideline.
Why we use bands:
-
Helps create more space on court.
-
Promotes higher-scoring games.
-
Ensures everyone gets a turn.
-
Increases enjoyment for players.
-
Creates fair matchups.
Coaches’ guidance for fair matchups:
-
Keep matchups balanced—swap bands or adjust players if there is a big size or ability difference (e.g., a large Year 4 boy vs. a small, timid Year 3 girl).
-
Goal: Every player feels safe, confident, and involved on court.
