BBNZ Secondary School 3X3 National Slam 2014

Welcome back to a new and exciting year of Basketball.

During December last year, Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) launched the 2014 Burger King 3X3 National Tour (www.basketball.org.nz /3x3) which offers a circuit of basketball events in 10 locations around country.  The tour is to encourage those on the periphery of the sport to enter with their mates and take part at a competitive or participation level.  There is an elite element that will attract much interest as the Tour will form the basis for BBNZ to select a men’s national under 18 3X3 team to play at the 2014 Youth Olympics in China and a men’s team to play at the 2014 World Championship in Russia.  3X3 is equivalent to 20/20 cricket and 7’s rugby and is a form of the game where New Zealand has already enjoyed success – Tall Blacks ISAAC FOTURUEBEN TE RANGI and TAI WEBSTER combined to help capture the inaugural FIBA Youth 3X3 World Championship in 2011.  With FIBA pushing for inclusion in the 2020 Olympics, this format represents perhaps an even better chance for our basketballers to end up on the podium.

BBNZ in conjunction with Auckland Basketball Services Ltd (ABSL) are pleased to offer an exciting and new event to the Secondary Schools basketball calendar; the Secondary Schools 3X3 National Slam.  The Slam is a two year piloted event for the 2014 and 2015 season to be played in Auckland held during the summer tournament week.  The Slam is the first 3X3 event to hit our tournament calendar; collaboration between BBNZ, ABSL and NZSSSC is essential to set a framework for 2016 onwards, to monitor the rules and regulations of this format and create operational processors.  As we progress through each piloted year, changes will be implemented if appropriate.

Calendar

The Slam will be held from March 25-28, 2014 at the Trust Arena in Waitakere.  The Slam dates and due dates are also available on the 2014 Tournaments Calendar at the BBNZ website link http://www.basketball.org.nz/competitions/tournaments/calendar/
