BWC Masters team win gold at Masters Games 09

The Waitakere Masters Basketball team came away from the New Zealand Masters Games in Wanganui with a gold medal in the Over 40s division.

The team, consisting of several Waitakere ex-NBL 1st division players, fought a hard final against the favorites, "Five-Oh", a Wanganui team who had previously beaten Waitakere in the first round robin.

The low final score of 59-49 was indicative of the intense defense played by both sides in this epic final which saw the lead change several times.

Top scorer, Drew Beveridge along with captain Shane Tipa Compain, emotionally drained after the final whistle, led the team in a rousing victory chant before announcing their retirement...Until the next one. Clearly this is a team from the past for the future.

Congratulations Waitakere Masters team and thank you for giving back to the sport of basketball in Waitakere City.

(I believe it is this cycle of improvement that makes associations strong. Then strongest associations are the ones that have had senior players give back to the juniors. Long may this continue!!!)
