BBNZ Article

Interestingly both 2011 Under 17 National Championship Finals were rematches of the 2010 Finals when Wellington prevailed in the Men’s competition and Waitakere in the Women’s.

The two most dominant players in this years Women’s tournament went head to head in the Final. The outcome of the battle between New Zealand age group international forwards Deena Franklin ( North Harbour) and Penina Davidson (Waitakere) would go a long way to deciding the outcome. Both players had averaged over 20 points and 10 rebounds a game during the tournament.

The afore mentioned players did not disappoint, scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the game, the scores locked at 8-8 midway through the opening quarter .A Jaycin Tini three pointer gave Harbour a 17-12 advantage late in the period but Theresa Fitzpatrick replied with a baseline drive, Harbour ahead 18-16 at the first break.

Keretina Hakarai converted a triple for Waitakere prompting an 8-0 run early in the second quarter, 26-20 to the Westerners. Harbour then replied with an identical run broken by Amorangi Ngata-Atkins. Waitakere then experienced a little foul trouble but still held a 34-32 advantage at half time the Franklin v Davidson battle locked at 12 points each.

Harbour made a handy start to the second half scoring the first 6 points of the period. Waitakere hit back with a pair of baskets before consecutive buckets from Franklin and a three pointer from Tini stretched the Harbour lead to10 points six minutes into the period. Keretina Hakaraia made a three pointer for Waitakere followed by 3 from 4 free throws by Fustina Tuala, Harbour just ahead 49-46 with 10 minutes remaining.

Tuala and Davidson scored the opening baskets of the final period as Waitakere closed to a single point, Tini replying with another triple – 54-50 with 5:40 remaining. A pair of baskets followed from Bronwyn Kjestrup, Harbour ahead 59-52 with three minutes to go. Davidson scored on the drive and Keziah Lewis scored after an offensive rebound, 59-56 with a tense two minutes remaining. Turnover by Harbour and another score by Lewis. Olivia Berry made a couple of freethrows then Davidson scores in the lane, makes a free throw and then comes up with a block! 61-61 with 18 seconds remaining. Both teams commit turnovers and the game goes into extra time.

Tini made a pair of baskets in the extra period but better execution from Waitakere including 5 from 8 from the foul line saw them close out an excellent game 70-68 If the Franklin v Davidson battle had been a boxing match a draw would have been a fair result.

Final Score

Waitakere 70 (Davidson 30, Hakaraia 11, Tuala 9)
North Harbour 68 (Franklin 24, Tini 15, Kjestrup)

The Men’s final promised a fascinating contest between the power in the paint of the Harbour ‘bigs’ and the speed of the Wellington guards.

7 minutes into the game after Kwain Kiriau hit a three pointer Harbour coach Tony Webster was forced to call a time out, his team trailing 20-9, the Wellington guards scoring at will. Six scorers in total for Wellington, ahead an impressive 27-16 at quarter time.

Paul Won and Jordan Hamlin opened the scoring in the second period before Sisi Palei replied for Harbour with a pair of close range baskets. A triple from Hamlin extended the Wellington advantage to 17 points midway through the quarter. Harbour, led by Logan Poloai stepped up their defensive intensity but were struggling to make a major dent in the Wellington lead, the black and golds in command 49-32 at the main break. Nico Buckrell led all scorers with 13 points, Palei the best for Harbour with 9 points.

Josh Howe and Palei scored early in the second half but Hamlin responded with a three pointer for Wellington who had extended their lead to 20 points midway through the third period. Jamal Mikaio made a reverse lay up, added a free throw and the lead was 63-40. Luuk Witteveen scored a triple to spark a 7-0 run from Harbour but the locals still had a mountain to climb, down 72-52 at threequarter time.

A pair of baskets from Tai Webster and buckets from Howe and Poloai forced a Wellington time out with seven minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets, Wellington still ahead 82-70 with 3:44 remaining and significantly Howe and Palei both fouled out. A Poloai triple reduced the lead to 8 points but it was as close as Harbour could get, Won sealing the deal for the boys from the capital.

Final Score
