RULES & REGULATIONS PERTAINING TO THE SPORT OF SQUASH AT THE ARAFURA GAMES
The following Rules and Regulations relating to the Squash Tournament shall be read in conjunction with the principle Arafura Rules.
OFFICIALS
1.1 Tournament Director
Squash NT shall appoint a Tournament Director for the duration of the Tournament. The Tournament Director shall be responsible for the overall running of the tournament and liaison with visiting Team Officials.
1.2 Tournament Referee
A Tournament Referee will be appointed for the duration of the Tournament.
1.3 Tournament Match Committee
A Tournament Match Committee shall be appointed for the duration of the Tournament. This Committee will be responsible for overseeing entries, draw formats, playing schedules etc.
1.4 Sports Tribunal
A Sports Tribunal will be convened, if necessary, to adjudicate on all protests or disputes.
EVENTS CONDUCTED
2.1 2.1 The Arafura Squash Tournament shall consist of both Individual and Team Events in both Ladies and Men's Divisions.
2.2 Players from regions with insufficient numbers to nominate a team in the Team Event, are eligible to enter an Individual Event for their region.
NOMINATIONS FROM PARTICIPATING REGIONS
Each region proposing to contest the Arafura Squash Tournament shall lodge an official entry with the Sports Manager, Arafura Games by the closing date noted on the official Arafura Accreditation Form.
3.1 Team Event Nomination
Regions entering a team must complete a Team Nomination Form indicating the team/s (male and/or female) they are nominating for the Event by the closing date noted in Paragraph 15.4.
3.2 Individual Event Nomination
Players wishing to participate in an Individual Event must lodge an official Individual Accreditation Form by the closing date noted in Paragraph 15.4.
OFFICIAL CONTACT DETAILS FOR VISITING REGIONS
4.1 Each visiting region must provide the Arafura Squash Coordinator with the name, address, telephone number, facsimile number and an email contact address of their nominated contact person prior to 31 March 2007.
4.2 All relevant details pertaining to the draw, final timetables etc will be forwarded to the nominated contact person.
RULES
5.1 The Tournament will be played under the "Rules of the International Game of Squash Rackets" as prescribed by the World Squash Federation.
BALLS
6.1 The approved ball for the duration of the Tournament shall be the Dunlop Yellow XX, or equivalent, as supplied by Squash NT.
REFEREES
7.1 Participating players from the various regions will be required to assist with marking and refereeing throughout the Tournament.
7.2 The Tournament Referee may appoint an official referee to any match.
TROPHIES/AWARDS
8.1 Teams Events
Official Arafura Games medals shall be awarded to the players, designated reserves and one official for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams in each Team Event.
1st placed team shall be awarded the Gold Medal
2nd placed team shall be awarded the Silver Medal
3rd placed team shall be awarded the Bronze Medal
8.2 Individual Events
Main Event
Official Arafura Games medals shall be awarded in both the Ladies and Mens Main Event as follows:
Winner Gold Medal
Runner-Up Silver Medal
Semi Finalists Bronze Medal (2)
Plate Event
The winner of each Plate Event shall be awarded a trophy/medallion/prize as determined by the Match Committee.
OFFICIAL TOURNAMENT MEETINGS
9.1 Official's Meeting
The Tournament Director will conduct a meeting of all Team Managers prior to the commencement of the Tournament to confirm Tournament rules and organisation. Team Managers will be advised of the meeting time on their arrival in Darwin.
9.2 Player's Meeting
The Tournament Referee will conduct a meeting of all players prior to commencement of play on Day 1 of the Arafura Tournament.
OFFICAL SQUASH HANDBOOK
10.1 An official handbook will be produced to assist squash participants throughout their visit. This handbook will be distributed to Team Officials as soon after their arrival in Darwin as possible.
PRACTICE TIMES
11.1 Practice courts will be available for visiting teams on a rostered basis prior to the commencement of the Arafura Tournament.
Bookings for practice courts should be arranged with the Arafura Squash Coordinator prior to teams arriving in Darwin.
CLOTHING
12.1 Players may wear clothing of any colour or combination of colours.
12.2 Playing clothes for men shall consist of a short-sleeved shirt, shorts, socks and playing shoes.
12.3 Playing clothes for women shall consist of a shirt worn with a skirt or shorts, or a dress, socks and playing shoes.
12.4 Shirts and tops may carry sponsor displays and national/region badges.
12.5 Shoes shall have a non-marking sole.
12.6 The wearing of headwear whilst playing is only permitted for religious or cultural reasons.
EYEWEAR
13.1 Protective eyewear must be worn by players 19 years and under whenever they are participating in the tournament and/or training sessions.
SCORING
14.1 A match shall consist of the best of five (5) games. Each game is to nine (9) points.
TEAM EVENTS
15.1 A team consists of three (3) players and a maximum of two (2) reserves.
15.2 Two (2) team events shall be conducted:
- Mens Team Event : open to all male players regardless of age
- Ladies Team Event : open to all female players regardless of age
15.3 Nominations
Regions must lodge a Team Nomination Form no later than the official closing date of 13 April 2007 to ensure eligibility.
15.4 Format for Team Events
The team event shall be conducted on a round robin, all play all, basis.
If team entries exceed nine (9), teams will be placed into two (2) separate pools. At the completion of all matches, teams within each pool shall be placed in order according to the competition points gained.Teams seeded 1 at the completion of the round robin event in each pool will contest the Gold & Silver medals, and teams seeded 2 in each pool will contest the Bronze medal.
15.5 Team Order and Changes
Each Team Manager will be required to lodge the names of the players in their team in descending order of strength at the Officials Meeting (as noted in 9.1). The official team order will be posted at the Squash Centre prior to the Team Event commencing.
This order may not be changed without the permission of the Tournament Match Committee.
Application for such permission shall be lodged in writing with the Tournament Match Committee at least 8 hours prior to the proposed change.
15.6 Appeals Against Team Order
Any appeal against the order of merit of another team shall be lodged in writing to the Tournament Match Committee. Such appeal shall be determined by the Tournament Match Committee as soon as practicable, and where possible prior to the commencement of the next match.
15.7 Order of Play
The order of play shall be determined by the toss of a coin. The winning Team Captain shall have first choice and the opposing team will have next choice.
Players will be required to contest all rubbers in a match even if the result of the match has been decided.
Any player not on court ready to play within 10 minutes of the scheduled starting time, or 10 minutes after the completion of the preceding rubber (where applicable), will be forfeited.
If an entire team fails to arrive on time, the match shall be conceded as a 0-3 loss.
The Team Official has the right to appeal to the Tournament Match Committee in the event of transport problems or other unforeseen circumstances.
15.8 Allocation of Points
Matches shall be decided on rubbers won. If rubbers are equal, matches shall be decided on games. In the case of rubbers and games equal the matches shall be decided on points.
Competition points shall be allocated as follows:
· One (1) point for each rubber won
· One (1) additional point for the team winning the match overall.
An undefeated team automatically will be declared the winner.
Where teams have an equal number of competition points, their order shall be determined by a count back in the following sequence:
· Team with highest number of matches won will be declared the winner.
· If matches won are equal, the team winning the highest number of rubbers will be declared the winner.
· If the number of matches and rubbers won are equal, the team with the highest
total of games won will be declared the winner.
· If still equal, the team gaining the highest individual points total shall be placed higher.
· If there is still no clear winner then a play-off shall be conducted.
Each for an undefeated team, the winner of an event shall be the team in the number one position as determined by the above.
INDIVIDUAL EVENTS
16.1 Individual Ladies and Mens Events will be conducted in conjunction with the Teams Events.
16.2 Player Seedings
The Tournament Match Committee shall be responsible for the seeding of players.
Team Officials are required to submit to the Arafura Squash Coordinator by
1st May 2007 the following information for all players contesting an individual event.
(a) Local seeding list of region, including all participating Arafura entrants
(b) PSA/WISPA current ranking (if any)
(c) Results of tournaments contested in 2007 including names of opponents and match results.
Seedings for the Arafura Individual Events will be announced after the completion of the NT Open Championships which will be conducted prior to the commencement of the Arafura event.
16.3 Draw
The Individual Events shall consist of a main event and single plate event. Players are guaranteed two matches only.
In preparing the draw, information provided by Team Officials shall be taken into account and seedings determined by the Tournament Match Committee.
The Tournament Match Committee shall take all reasonable steps to avoid drawing first round matches between competitors from the same Region, and the bunching of competitors from the same Region in the one-quarter of the draw.
In the event of a seeded player withdrawing from the event prior to 6.00 pm on the day immediately before the first match of an event is scheduled for play, the Tournament Match Committee shall fill the vacancy by moving the players, in accordance with the method originally used to establish the draw.
16.4 Nominations
Each player wishing to contest an Individual Event must lodge an Official Accreditation Form no later than the official closing date of 13 April 2007.
